The Wild Dingo Of Fraser Island
The Fraser Island Dingo is believed to be the purest strain of Dingo on the East Coast of Australia. It is illegal to feed or touch the Dingoes as it causes the animals to become "humanised". There have been recorded instances of Dingoes attacking humans with the fatal attack of a 9 year old boy. This is not a regular occurance and if people are aware of the danger then these instances can be minimised.
The Dingoes of Fraser Island are opportunistic hunters and scavengers. At certain times of the year bird migrations leave exhausted incoming birds lying on the beaches unable to fly or move, at this time of the year the Dingoes eat reasonably well, however at other times of the year they are grabbing food wherever they can find it, which brings them into contact with humans.
At the present time it is thought that the population numbers around 200 and the feeling is that this number is unsustainable with not enough food for this number of Dingoes. Here are some
simple rules you should follow.
NEVER FEED DINGOES.
ALWAYS STAY CLOSE TO
YOUR CHILDREN-WALK
IN GROUPS.
DON'T ENCOURAGE, APPROACH
OR EXCITE DINGOES.
IF APPROACHED,
FACE THE DINGO
AND CALMLY
BACK AWAY.
STORE ALL FOOD,
BAIT AND RUBBISH
SECURELY.
SPRING - Learning from their mothers. If food is available from campsites and tourists the mothers may not teach pups natural hunting skills.
SUMMER - Testing their strength. Puppy play can be aggressive, especially towards children.

Seasonal.
AUTUMN - Mating season a time of dominance, adults fiercely protect their territory and will snarl and nip humans.
